A Taste of Sarawak in the Heart of PJ

Once a while, you just need to get away from your usual hawker fare to try something adventurous, a taste of Sarawak. There are quite a number of cafes/hawker stalls claiming to sell Sarawak food, but there's one that stands out - Restoran Mama Ting, located in SS2
The restaurant was packed with diners when I arrived and fortunately, we managed to get a table after a short wait. The place has a simple decor, typical kopitiam set up and nothing of Sarawak to show. Menu is simple and straight forward. The owner is very friendly and if you're not sure what to order, he will recommend a few dishes for you to try.

I ordered the Chef's recommendation, Sarawak Laksa while my wife ordered Fried Noodles aka Chow Kwai Teow Sarawak Style (emphasized by the owner). You just need to write on the order sheet what you want and give to the staff. The food came quite fast.

The Sarawak Laksa is very tasty, not spicy and has a very different taste as compared to the typical curry. You can't taste the powdery curry flavour, which is good and that means the paste must be made fresh. The portion is quite big and full of ingredients. The chilli that came with it was spicy and a good addition to the Laksa.
The Fried Noodles was full of "wok hei" or literally translated as Breath of the Wok. The noodles were perfectly cooked and yummilicious, one of the better CKT I have tried. The owner emphasized that it's cooked Sarawak style, not Penang or KL style. The flavour is quite different, not too salty and there's no cockles. The lime gives it a tinge of saltiness and adds a new dimension to the taste (you can opt not to add the lime)
To top it up, the coffee was to die for, good strong coffee taste not overly roasted beans and I opted for less sugar without milk. Highly recommended
Overall, it was a good meal, and I would recommend this place. I'll be back to try the Kolo Mee and other dishes.
