Since it was a long weekend and I didn't want to "jam" with the other roadies, I opted to hunt for some good long time roadside stalls that serves up delicious food. I managed to come across 2 good locations in PJ that serves simple "everyday comfort food". Once a while you come across great food at unassuming places,
Saturday - Day 1 Yee Kee Ipoh Noodle Section 17
This little stall has been around for umpteen years and is located below some government flats along Jalan 17/1A in Section 17, Petaling Jaya. While it's not exactly a roadside stall, some of the seating area is place next to the road, albeit covered.
Shop Front, below some flats
This stall is famous for its fish ball noodles and kampung "ngar choy kai". However for this trip, we opted only for fish ball noodles. The soup is very flavorful while the fish ball is relatively bouncy with a good taste of freshness. I also added meatball as a side dish and it was a bit too hard for my liking. You can opt for "kon lo" or dry noodles or with soup base
The shop is relatively clean and so is the eating space outside. One setback is it can get quite hot sitting outside despite being covered and with fans blowing. Parking can be quite a problem and you may need to double park in front of the shop
The price however is slightly on the upside as compared to other simple fish ball noodles in and around Klang Valley. Moreover I noticed they have a different way of charging you, all dishes are calculated separately.
Individually charged!!
Despite the higher price, the taste, portion and quality is worth the price. You just need to imagine you're in some "atas" cafe.....😁😁😁😁
For dinner, it was home prepared Korean BBQ with lots of Soju !!!! Because we didn't want to smoked the dining area, we had it at our car porch !!!!😆😆😆😆
Sunday - Day 2 Aik Prawn Mee and Assam Laksa SEA Park
This is your typical roadside stall, located next to SEA Park market at the junction of Jalan 21/17 and Jalan 21/11B. You can't miss this stall. The stall operated out from a small van and seating is along the corridor of the market. The owners only open from 12 noon till about 4 pm plus.
The Mobile Stall
We ordered a bowl of Prawn Noodles with added pork ribs and a bowl of Assam Laksa together with Ice kacang (from different stall)
The Prawn Noodles was full of flavor with it's "prawness" and sweetness and at the same time not too over powering. The pork ribs is cooked just perfectly and falls of the bone easily, soft and tasty. The chilli for the noodles were just as good, not too spicy but hot enough to give the kick. The Assam laksa was just as delicious and you can taste the "assamness" with the "har ko" flavor and ikan kembong comes in full pieces and not mashed up.
The portion is relatively big and good enough for a full meal. The only setback at this place is the smell from the market. Occasionally, you get the smell of raw meat and seafood.....but the smell of the prawn noodles and assam laksa takes you mind away from the market surroundings
We finished off our meal with a delightful cool Ice Kacang. The sweetness was just right for my liking. The condiments were a bit let down though.
Prices have gone up considerably as well despite this place being a roadside stall and still very popular. It was packed and there were queues of people waiting to either "Ta Pau" or waiting for a seat.
Menu with respective price
Despite the high price, I can truly say I was satisfied with both the Prawn Noodle and Assam Laksa.
Just across the stall is a shop that sells Chinese pastry and desserts. I happened to pass it and was curious since there was a queue....and ended up buying some local pastries
The Shop front and list of food for sale
Overall a good weekend outing looking for roadside food stalls to enjoy a hearty and delicious food. I'd probably do this again soon
