Recently, I made a day trip to Mantin for another round of durian feast at a farm. It's a short drive from where I live, slightly more than 1 hour. We left early, around 8.00 am and decided to stop over in Mantin for breakfast.
The view from the durian farm
Our morning stop was breakfast at Restoran Ong Dim Sum. Since we were early, we were the first customer. We settled in quickly and ordered a variety of Dim Sum
The dim sum was fairly good, considering that you find it in a small town. The owner explained that he made all these himself and not bought from other suppliers. The food came out hot, fairly decent portions and not too salty. Overall, it was a good breakfast meal, ordinary in taste and palatable.
After breakfast, we proceeded to our main attraction, durian at Tijah durian plantation. It's located a short distance from Mantin Town, up on a hilltop. The plantation is well kept and has a few huts to accommodate visitors. It commands a great view of the surrounding areas. We opted for different variety of durians minus the popular MSW. We managed to get a glimpse of Jungle Durian too.
Besides the usual variety of Tekka, and Red Prawn, we managed to try a new variety aptly named Lightning or D600 (center picture above). The color is quite deep yellow with a very strong taste of sweetness and a slight pungent aroma. The size of the durian is quite big. I found it quite tasty. Like its name, the taste hits you the minute you take the first bite, just like lightning. A visit to the durian farm is never complete if you don't 'Ta Pau' some back home.
Since it was close to lunch time, we were recommended to try out this restaurant at the bottom of the hill. Literally, a shack in the middle of nowhere, Restoran Sungei Raya. This place is famous for their Wine Chicken Soup.
Signature Dish, Wine Chicken Soup
It was packed with customers when we arrived but fortunately, we managed to get a table. Their signature dish, the Wine Chicken Soup was yummilicious. Well balanced broth with the wine and cooked to perfection. Every table that was occupied had this dish on the table. The rest of the dishes were good as well. The Paku vegetables or fern vegetables were delicious. The Ma Po taufu was not too spicy while the Petai sambal was just right. The Petai was fresh, and you can hear the crunch as you bite into it.Overall, it was a good day out and thoroughly enjoyed my trip.
